Getting your hair done is one of those things that really completes your look.  Put so eloquently by Coco Chanel herself.

A woman who cuts her hair is about to change her life.          Coco Chanel

Coco Chanel clearly knew the power of a good haircut. There is something about getting our hair done that can feel life changing. Agree?

My First “Loft” Experience

I was going through a difficult time in my life the first time owner of the Loft, Sylvie Prud’Homme gave my hair the big chop. I needed a pick me up and I wanted to make a change. Since losing weight wasn’t an instant fix, and a new outfit would get old quickly – the solution was simple – a new hairstyle. I was trolling instagram when I came across the chicest looking bob. I found it. The change I needed to make.  I immediately booked an appointment with Sylvie at The Loft on Queen Street. From the second I sat in her chair, she made me feel like a new woman who could accomplish anything! I found the new me.

A New Loft Salon Opens

A year later and I’m still rocking the bob (probably ready for a change soon). For my most recent trim, Sylvie wanted me to come see her at her new location on Dundas Street West (this is the 2nd Loft in Toronto in addition to 2 located in Ottawa).  “Linds, you are going to love the space, it’s a live/work concept”.   A what? I had no idea what she was talking about. What was this so called live/work thing? I thought it was a salon? I told Sylvie, “I’m not into hippy-dippy”. “Don’t worry, you’ll love it”, she replied. The Loft Toronto, The Loft Urban Salon, Best Hair Salon, Toronto Hair Salon, the loft dundas hair salonthe loft dundas hair salon, The Loft Toronto, The Loft Urban Salon, Best Hair Salon, Toronto Hair SalonThe Loft Toronto, The Loft Urban Salon, Best Hair Salon, Toronto Hair Salon

I went from feeling like I was running on empty and overwhelmed to a sense of calm. I don’t know if it was the chilled tunes in the background, the high ceilings, the inspirational images, the dogs that came to greet me, or the fact that all the stylists were all completely immersed in their clients’ hair. Whatever the reason, I felt like I was somewhere invigorating. It was tranquil but energizing all at the same time.

Eco-Friendly

The property was previously home to a prominent Toronto architect, which meant that all Sylvie had to do with the space, was to turn it into a salon. It’s an eco-friendly, self-sustainable property. It has a rain barrel for the water which feeds the gardens and a green roof that heats the main floor. The hot water is on demand and it runs through the floor to provide heat. The walls contain 100% environmental  insulation, rather than asbestos, like many old buildings. Renewable energy source, Bull Frog Power, provides the power for the property. The salon is Green Circle Certified, which means that all salon waste is kept away from landfills and waterways.

Work/Live Space

What is this live/work concept? It’s simple. During the day clients can sit at the long white marble island and sip herbal tea (or vino). After the salon is closed, the space is transformed into Sylvie’s kitchen, where she cooks her delicious-looking Paleo meals (hint, hint – invite please). So yes, Sylvie lives upstairs and her kitchen is in the center of the salon.

“Don’t you ever just want to get away from work?”, I asked. Sylvie explained that she would not want her space any other way.  “I love to host the girls [stylists] for a bbq after work. Friends feel comfortable dropping by, while at the same time, clients also feel comfortable”.  Don’t let the concept of a work/live salon space fool you. There are no running shoes in the hallway or old mail on the counter.  The space is clean and modern. The luxurious marble and stainless kitchen, white walls and natural light streaming in from the backyard really makes this work/live space something truly luxurious and special.

The Bob Of My Life

My visit wouldn’t be complete without my favourite do! As I mentioned, I decided to rock the bob one last time.
