Today the beauty buffs are talking about The Holidays!
With December 1st having come and gone, no doubt many of us will be going to one or two….or three holiday parties this season (I’ve already been to one in November!). Holiday parties come in all shapes and sizes from casual sunday egg nog and carols to formal black tie affairs. No matter the holiday party type, one thing will be consistent – our purse will be filled with our beauty essentials. Here are my top 5 holiday party beauty essentials that you should not leave home without this season.
A girl should NEVER be without her lipstick. Whether it’s a sunday brunch or a festive friday work party, one thing is for certain – we need our lipstick! For holiday parties I like to go for long-wearing lipstick because with meals, drinks etc. you don’t know when you’ll be able to excuse yourself to freshen up. I’m a bolder girl, so I tend to go for darker pinks and reds for the holiday season. My favorites:
Revlon Colorstay – Muse – a stunning long wearing matte pink.
NARS lip pencils: Dragon Girl – I’ve probably replaced this color in my collection three times. It comes in a matte formula and a slightly more glossy version. One thing is for certain – you have red lips wearing this beauty. You would be surprised to find that this red actually looks good on a number of skin tones so if you have been scared to try a bold/bright red – give this one a try.
Cover Girl 350: Eternal – Another staple in my collection that’s always fresh and bold. A dark fuschia pink, this color is affordable and stays where you put it.
2. Powder (preferably in a compact)
Sometimes the light and heat from being around many people at the end of the day can cause havoc on our skin. Ever go to the ladies room, check yourself in the mirror and realise you’re a serious greaseball? Well, thankfully, we have our handy compacts to help minimize the not so healthy glow. A powder in a compact is more than ideal just in case you can’t find a mirror. My favorites:
Shu Umera: Lightbulb compact Smooth and grease-free, this formula is truly a favorite that I cannot live without.
Mac: Studio Fix This has been a favorite of mine for more than 15 years. There’s a reason it’s still one of Mac’s best sellers! Acting as a foundation and powder in one, this compact is a lifesaver for uneven, shiny skin.
3. Perfume (travel size)
Always nice to freshen up mid-party with a spritz or two of a light perfume. Don’t go for anything too strong, as your new party bff might be overly sensitive. Try to find something that says fresh, clean and not overpowering.
If you have a handy dandy atomizer than you can decant your favorite perfume into a purse size spray! Perfecto! Available at most travel stores and Sephora carries their own brand too.
My favorites (perfume is very personal, so these are ones that suit me)
YSL – Manifesto
Estee Lauder – Bali Dream
4. Lip Balm (tinted)
You don’t need to excuse yourself to the ladies to apply a lip gloss. It’s the perfect tool to use mid-party to freshen up your lips. Although we have our lipstick on, we may not be able to get away especially with the impromptu photo opp, so whip out your lip gloss and freshen up your lips! Picture perfect.
Maybelline – Baby lips Pink Punch: Baby lips is an affordable lip balm available at most drug stores. When I met the talented Grace Lee, Maybelline Canada’s lead makeup artist at Toronto Fashion Week this fall, Grace told me that she uses baby lips for EVERYTHING – as a highlighter, as a blush, as an eyeshadow. It’s her go-to for everything makeup. Who knew?
Fresh – Rose: The scent and feeling of this lip balm is to die for. Not only is it tinted, it acts as a lip treatment for dry chapped skin (perfect for the winter).
Burts Bees – Pink Blossom: A new favorite of mine, I carry this lip balm with me everywhere. It’s not as tinted as the first two, but it does give the perfect amount of moisture over my lipstick.
5. Breath Mints
With the bevies and food going around, it could be an altogether conversation stopper if you don’t have fresh breath. I work with clients non-stop and I’m a coffee junkey so breath mints are truly my best friend and at a holiday party, they’re essential. One of my biggest pet peeves is when people chew gum while talking to other people in a social situation (thanks mom for making me this anal about gum chewers). Gum is great in the right situations, but at a party? No way – stick to the fast acting mints to avoid chewing like a cow in front of your new friends! My favorites:
Listerine – Cool Mint PocketPaks: These little guys are a little funny the first time you try them. You put them on your tongue and then in a few seconds, they dissolve. That said, there’s no chewing involved and they’re fast so perfect for the party when you’re talking to people and you don’t want to be rude by chewing in their face.
So, get ready for your holiday party and ensure your purse is filled with: lipstick, power, perfume, tinted lip gloss and breath mints and you can be sure you will be the beauty queen of your party.
Until next time,
